Shape the future of SOLIDWORKS

The SOLIDWORKS World Top Ten List is still open for submitting ideas in preparation for SOLIDWORKS World 2015 at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix Arizona February 8 -11th in which the Top Ten user voted ideas from this forum will be showcased. The SOLIDWORKS World Top Ten List is YOUR wish list.
More than 90% of the enhancements in SOLIDWORKS are directly requested by customers. This is your chance to have your voice heard. You are likely to see your idea or one you voted for in a future release of SOLIDWORKS!
Whether or not you’re attending SOLIDWORKS World 2015 in Phoenix, we look forward to seeing your ideas and hope to see you there.

Let the ideas… Begin! Submit them HERE.
Summary:
December 12, 2014: end for new idea submissions.
December 15, 2014: voting on all ideas begins.
January 23, 2015: voting ends.

Spotlight on Features: Working with Sheet metal tables, understanding the measured parameters

In the October blog we looked at the default gauge tables included in the SOLIDWORKS installation. Specifically we looked at Gauge tables.
In order to understand gauge and bend table we must understand the sheet metal parameters the table are controlling. This month we will be concentrating on the parameters that bend and gauge table measures.

What Sheet Metal Gauge tables does SOLIDWORKS provide with its installation?

In the September blog we looked at the default tables included in the SOLIDWORKS installation. Specifically we looked at Bend Tables.
This month we will be concentrating on gauge tables.

Spotlight on features: SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation’s Min/Max Table

The Min/Max Table in SOLIDWORKS Flow simulation is an overlooked tool which shows a list of parameters (which you can customize) and the maximum and minimum parameter values.
Dull? Read what’s next:
If the you highlight one of the parameters, the program creates a blue and red dot in the graphics window. The red dot indicates the location of the maximum parameter value selected and the blue dot the minimum parameter value location.
In the blink of an eye, you can see where min and max pressure are and then switch to where the min and max velocities happen, then again switch to the temperatures!

Spotlight on features: SOLIDWORKS ELECTRICAL 2015 – Excel export/import

Excel export/import it is a new feature in SOLIDWORKS Electrical 2015. This feature allows you to manage project data outside SOLIDWORKS Electrical. Data is exported via an Excel file in which you can modify marks, user data, manufacturer part data, etc. Afterward, this data is imported to the project to be compared with the project data. The user validates the changes or can keep the original data. This article explains the four steps in the procedure to

  1. Create a new Excel template
  2. Export to Excel
  3. Modify data within Excel
  4. Import from Excel

Noteworthy Solutions from the SOLIDWORKS Knowledge Base

icon - SW Are step by step instructions available for the workaround for SPR 830957 – “SimulationXpress cannot solve any study in 2015 SP0 if full version of Simulation is not installed – ‘Study Failed’ message”?
Yes, please see the PDF attached to Solution Id: S-067253 which contains instructions along with screenshots. In short, the solution is to modify the SOLIDWORKS 2015 SP0 installation to install the full version of SOLIDWORKS Simulation.

icon - SW What happened to the Toolbox’s swbrowser.mdb file in SOLIDWORKS 2015?
In SOLIDWORKS 2015, the SWBrowser.mdb file was converted from the 32-bit MS Access format to SQLite format. The file extension for this new databse is .sldedb (swbrowser.sldedb).
If you are upgrading from a pre-2015 version, the legacy swbrowser.mdb file will still reside in the “lang” folder (typically: C:\SOLIDWORKS Data \lang\english\) after the upgrade, along with the newly converted swbrowser.sldedb file. However, keep in mind that SOLIDWORKS 2015 will only use the swbrowser.sldedb file.
Please reference solution S-066846 detailing the process of upgrading legacy Toolbox/Hole Wizard data to SOLIDWORKS 2015 and newer.
From Solution Id: S-066868.

icon - SW How do I manually upgrade legacy Toolbox / Hole Wizard data for use with SOLIDWORKS 2015 and newer?
See the PDF attached to Solution Id: S-066846 for instructions.

icon - SW Why isn’t it possible to open SOLIDWORKS 2015 files in SOLIDWORKS 2014 SP5?
Please note that Previous Release Interoperability is not available in SOLIDWORKS 2014. SOLIDWORKS 2014 SP5 will not open files created or saved in SOLIDWORKS 2015. This is due to a change in the way files are saved in SOLIDWORKS 2015.
From Solution Id: S-067058.

Icon - EPDM What can cause the error “Could not get the files from the database…. (You haven’t logged in on the file vault)” after upgrading to SOLIDWORKS Enterprise PDM 2015 SP0?
The problem is that in some environments, after upgrading the vault to EPDM 2015 SP0 (v15.0.614), the ConisioMasterDb database may still have some active (residual) records from the legacy (pre-2015) “Automatic Log Off” setting; this in turn causes an error when working in the 2015 file vault. The PDF file attached to Solution Id: S-067254 details the process for confirming and correcting the problem.

icon - Flow Simulation SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation 2015 SP0 status ‘Monitor lost connection with solver’ appears immediately in the Solver Monitor when running any project and the solver does not finish. Are detailed steps available for correcting this issue?
This is a known issue in SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation 2015 SP0 in cases where no network connection is available (e.g. Network cable unplugged, Wi-Fi turned off, NIC/Ethernet Network Adapter card disabled, etc.). It has been reported in SPR 829972 and a fix is planned for 2015 SP1.
Please refer to the PDF attached to Solution Id: S-067293 which contains instructions for a workaround for 2015 SP0.

icon - Plastics Did the level of my SOLIDWORKS Plastics product automatically get downgraded in SOLIDWORKS 2015? The package name in the 2015 version looks like a lower level than in previous versions.
No. This is simply the result of a change in the naming convention for SOLIDWORKS Plastics 2015 package levels. There has been no downgrade in functionality.
The change in naming convention is as follows:
LEGACY NAME (2014)           NEW NAME (2015)
Plastics Professional               Plastics Standard
Plastics Premium                     Plastics Professional
Plastics Advanced                   Plastics Premium
For example, the highest level (which allows for warp and cooling analysis) was called Plastics Advanced in the 2014 version. In the 2015 version, this same level of SOLIDWORKS Plastics is called Plastics Premium.
A good way of understanding the new naming of SOLIDWORKS Plastics package levels is to go to Help > My Products to see which of the three possible levels of Plastics is available. A screenshot is attached for reference.
