<\/a><\/center>SOLIDWORKS Model Based Definition (MBD) has many predefined templates for both parts and assemblies, but creating custom templates allows more streamlined PDFs that are tailored to\u00a0the specifications of each product.\u00a0Using the\u00a0template editor allows lots of customization options including inserting more tables, changing the paper size and orientation of the template, or adding an image<\/strong>. Customization reduces the need to attach files to the PDF<\/u>, or send multiple documents along with the PDF.<\/p>\nTo begin creating a custom PDF template, open the template editor from the SOLIDWORKS MBD CommandManager.<\/p>\n
<\/a><\/center>Customize the template by adding new tables and pictures, changing the paper size or moving around existing placeholders. The template editor is a place to change the layout of the PDF. All the\u00a0data is formatted and organized in SOLIDWORKS and not the template editor.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/center>After customizing, click \u201cSave As\u201d in the top toolbar and browse to change the file location. Saving to the default folder, gives you this error message:<\/p>\n<\/a><\/center>This is because the default folder is for predefined templates made by SOLIDWORKS. Instead, make a new folder to save to your hard drive. Select \u201cBrowse\u201d then \u201cMake New Folder\u201d. Once done setting up the file locations, select \u201cOK\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/center>Name the custom template and select \u201cSave\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/center>After creating the custom template, save it and close the template editor.<\/p>\nRemember, it is only possible to change the type of text field from the template editor. To change custom properties, locate the \u201cFile Properties\u201d button from the SOLIDWORKS interface next to \u201cOptions\u201d and fill in the text fields. They will show up at the top of the PDF.<\/p>\n
<\/a><\/center><\/a><\/p>\nTo make the templates available for publishing to a 3D PDF, select \u201cOptions\u201d from the top toolbar and navigate to System Options > File Locations. Under \u201cShow Folders for:,\u201d choose \u201c3D PDF Themes\u201d at the very bottom.<\/p>\n
<\/a><\/center>Select the \u201cAdd\u2026\u201d button, then browse for and open the new custom templates folder. Select \u201cOK\u201d to close out of the browse dialog box, and \u201cOK\u201d again to close out of \u201cOptions\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/center>When publishing the PDF, the custom templates will populate under \u201cTheme\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/center>For more template editing tips reference the SOLIDWORKS MBD help page<\/a>.
