Changes that you make to the original sketch are reflected in the derived sketch.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1993 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.solidapps.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UpgradeNetworkLicenses9.png\" alt=\"UpgradeNetworkLicenses9\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Things to\u00a0know when using\u00a0Derived Sketches:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<div class=\"tip\">\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"listitem\">If you delete a sketch from which a new sketch was derived, you are prompted that all derived sketches will automatically be underived. Click <span class=\"uicontrol\">Yes<\/span> or <span class=\"uicontrol\">No<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"listitem\">You cannot add or delete sketch entities in a derived sketch. However, you can re-orient it with dimensions and geometric relations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"listitem\">When you make changes to the original sketch, the derived sketch updates automatically.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"listitem\">To break the link between the derived sketch and its parent sketch, right-click the derived sketch in the FeatureManager design tree and select <span class=\"uicontrol\">Underive<\/span>. (After the link is broken, the derived sketch no longer updates when you change the original sketch.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The video below shows how Derived Sketches are used in SOLIDWORKS:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/ZjNFLGORcSE?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"topictitle2\">Deriving Sketches in Parts<\/h2>\n<div class=\"DITAtopicbody\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<p class=\"stem\">To derive a sketch from a sketch in the same part:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Select the sketch from which you want to derive a new sketch.<\/li>\n<li>Hold the <strong>Ctrl <\/strong>key and click the face on which you want to place the new sketch.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Insert <\/strong>&gt; <strong>Derived Sketch<\/strong>.The sketch appears on the plane of the selected face, and the status line indicates that you are editing the sketch.<\/li>\n<li>Position the derived sketch by dragging and dimensioning it to the selected face. (The derived sketch is rigid and drags as a whole entity.)<\/li>\n<li>Exit the sketch.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"acu1316094970397\" class=\"nested1\" lang=\"en-us\">\n<p><!-- --><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"topictitle2\">Deriving Sketches in Assemblies<\/h2>\n<div class=\"DITAtopicbody\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<p class=\"stem\">To derive a sketch from a sketch in the same assembly:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click the part on which you want to place a derived sketch.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Edit Part<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select the sketch (in the same assembly) from which you want to derive a new sketch.<\/li>\n<li>Hold the <strong>Ctrl <\/strong>key and click the face on which you want to place the new sketch.<\/li>\n<li class=\"stepexpand\">Click <strong>Insert <\/strong>&gt; <strong>Derived Sketch<\/strong>.\n<p class=\"stepresult\">The sketch appears on the plane of the selected face.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Position the derived sketch by dragging and dimensioning it to the selected face.
