SOLIDWORKS Inspection Tips: How to manage quantities in inspection reports

Manage the quantities in your reports. How to get the inspection reports you are looking for!

One of the best features with SOLIDWORKS Inspection is the myriad of controls and options that allows you to get the reports you want. And this is critical because when it comes to create your reports you shouldn’t have to compromise or workaround software limitations.

One of the many questions I get is how SOLIDWORKS Inspection handles quantities in drawings.

Let’s take a look. In this drawing view, the radius dimension circled in red reference the two fillets you can see in this part. When capturing this radius dimension, SOLIDWORKS Inspection not only recognizes that this is a radius, it also extracts the quantity automatically!

Now, you have multiple options. You can decide to only have only one characteristic listed in your report or you can use the following button in the Characteristics Manager to create a line for each instance. This might make sense if you want to inspect both fillets and need to be able to write results for each of them.

The two instances are numbered X.1 and X.2 (in this case 4.1 and 4.2).

But you can also ungroup them and renumber them 4 and 5 by selecting the two characteristics in the Bill of Characteristics, right-click and then selecting Grouping > Ungroup.

At this point, since you have two separate balloons (4 and 5) you can also move them to different location in your drawing. For example, you can position each balloon on one of the fillet.

And to go back, it’s as easy. Simply go to the Grouping options, available directly from the right-click contextual menu.

It’s good to keep in mind that you can always copy and paste balloons before moving them to the right location on your drawings.

As you can see, it’s easy and fast to create complete ballooned drawings and inspection reports that matches your needs. If you’d like to learn more, watch the on-demand SOLIDWORKS Inspection webinar at your leisure.
