Changing Drawing References in SOLIDWORKS

Edit Referenced File Locations Dialog Box

When opening a part, assembly, or drawing document, you can edit the locations and names of referenced files, to reference different files.

To edit the locations and names of referenced files:

  1. Click Open or File > Open.
  2. In the Open dialog box, click References.
    1. The Edit Referenced File Locations dialog box appears.
  3. Edit the path or filename using one of the following methods:
  • Click in a cell and type to change the name or path.
  • Double-click in a cell, browse to a new folder or type a new name in the Open dialog box, then click Open.
  • Select cells under In Folder, or select the entire column by clicking In Folder. Click Replace and enter a word to find and a word to replace it with.For example, change “\samples” to “\archive” to open one or all part files from the archive directory. Click the Match case check box if the case is significant in the search.
  • In cells where you make changes, the text becomes green. To undo changes, right-click the cell and select Undo Change.
  • Click OK to make the changes and exit the dialog.

Edit Referenced Files in SOLIDWORKS Explorer

  1. Select the document in the File Explorer tab in the left pane.
  2. Select the References tab in right pane.
    1. Information about referenced documents appears in the following columns:
      1. Document. Lists the document names.
      2. Full path
      3. Size
      4. Reference type. Lists the type of reference (for example, in-context reference or model reference).
      5. Type. Lists the type of document (for example, SolidWorks Part Document).
      6. Date Modified
      7. Attributes (as reported by Windows Explorer)
