3D Printing

Following on from his presentation at our recent Customer Event, David Price from Laser Lines discusses the benefits of 3D printing below...

Why do people, when they have written an important letter, print it out so they can hold it in there hands to see if it looks right on the page? Is it because once we feel the paper, move it around and watch the light reflect on it, the letter becomes more than just text on a screen. This is really more an emotional response, as you don’t glean more information from the page than from the screen. When you are using Solid Edge rather than Word and you print out a 3D model the emotional delight in holding your design is still present, but now you can get far more information than you could ever get from the screen.

Combining Solid Edge and a 3D Printer you can easily convert your ideas into real parts. This enables you to better understand the parts so the design can be optimised improving function and cutting costs. Communication is also made easier as parts can be passed round, handled and fitted together allowing both colleagues and clients to understand the design and make constructive comments. Toolmakers and Production Managers can have input at a point when changes can easily be made potentially making huge savings in production costs. Clients who are not used to looking at design software are comfortable with models, improving the chance of winning contracts.

The Dimension 3D printer is clean and easy to use and runs in a normal office environment. This makes it an ideal choice to use in conjunction with Solid Edge, as Designers can produce models with minimal time away from their desk. Linked together they become a powerful tool improving product design, saving time and cutting costs.

Tip from the Helpdesk

With the release of V19, you can now save out bodies/models that are created/modified inside of an assembly (i.e. Frame components, post weld parts, etc) AND have an associative link.

Here are the details from Solid Edge Help:
The new command can be found in Assembly, under File…Save Selected Model

This new command will save the selected part to a new name, folder, and format you specify. This is useful when the part contains assembly features.

Because assembly features are visible only within the context of the assembly, saving a part with assembly feature modifications to a new document allows you to create a drawing for the modified part, prior to creating an assembly drawing. You can also use the stand-alone document for manufacturing or analysis purposes.

When working with a Weldment assembly, this is also useful when you have modified the part using assembly features to represent weld preparation or post-weld machining operations. Only material removal features, such as cut-outs, holes, and chamfers are copied to the new document.

The new document is associative to the parent document. If you want to break the associative link between the new document and the parent document, you can open the new document, then edit the part copy feature, and clear the Link To File option on the Part Copy Parameters dialog box. If you clear this option, then save the new document, the associative link is permanently broken.

V19 Node Locked Licensing
Home Use License.

Last month we discussed the changes to V19's Node Locked Licensing method.

"Home use" however has changed for both Node-Locked and Floating seats in V19. All home use seats will now be locked to a Disk Serial Number. Users that meet the following terms and conditions (extracted directly from the Solid Edge License Agreement) qualify for home use: "If the Software is permanently stored on the hard disk or other storage medium of a stand alone computer and only one person uses that computer more than 80% of the time it is in use, then that same person may also use the Software either on a portable computer or on a home computer."

The license will be generated from within the main license management website.

http://tinyurl.com/qw8oy

Select "V19 at Home" to register a new disk ID and generate the License.

Some important Notes about Home Use:

i) Home Use License files expire after 6 months

ii) Home Use License files expire after a new release

iii) Unlike Node Locked Licenses, a Home Use License can not be re-allocated during the lifetime of that license.
