Special
Edition: V19 Preview
Earlier this year we
told you about PLM World, an amalgamation of the Solid Edge Summit
and PLM University. The May 2006 event, held in Cincinnati, was a
massive success, attracting users from all over the US who were
lucky enough to see a sneak preview of Solid Edge V19. However they
weren't allowed to talk about it or tell anybody what they saw....
that is until now.
On June 5th UGS
officially launched V19 with a press release and a "What's New"
document outlining a few of the key developments in this major
release.
This months PLM
Express will explore a few of these key enhancements and what they
mean to you.
Highlights include...
- Motion simulation
-
Exploded Views and Assembly /
Disassembly
- Collaboration using JT
- Enhanced workflow for AutoCAD
data
-
Product Manufacturing
Information (3D annotation)
- Interoperability with NX CAM
Express
- Increased design management
productivity
-
Support for Microsoft Windows 64
bit OS architecture
- Increased sheet metal leadership
- Plus....Hundreds of customer
focused enhancements

Motion
Simulation
Using the new
motion simulation tools directly within the Solid Edge Assembly
Environment, engineers can create fast, accurate and realistic
conceptual motion studies as part of the design process. Animating
designs to demonstrate and communicate product functionality in real
time. Version 19 offers the capability to quickly and easily define
motion relationships and drivers, such as: gears, pulleys, hydraulic
cylinders and motors.
-
Gears are
enhanced assembly relationships
which
work by determining a relationship (or ratio) between adjacent
parts, such as gears and pulleys (rotation to rotation) Gears
efficiently solve motion between related components without the
need to define physical contact relationships making them fast
to implement and review.

Animated
and dynamic documentation
The new explode and
motion simulation capabilities in Solid Edge Version 19 help teams
communicate design ideas, represent large complex assemblies, create
technical illustrations in maintenance and repair manuals while
communicating clearer assembly manufacturing instructions and
training videos more easily using dynamic 3D motion files.
A new enhanced timeline automatically captures events when
“exploding” assemblies. Existing motion generated by motors and
gears, which provides precise control of products in motion, allows
users to create exceptional animations and presentations. Additional
camera and component paths create more realism and clarity,
including true fly troughs. Styles, textures and fading can be set
to emphasise or deemphasise items during animation. Pathfinder
representations help manage and speed editing of motors, gears and
explode events.
Combining the new motion simulation and explode capabilities with
Virtual Studio+ enables the capture and save of photorealistic
animations as standard AVIs.

Product
Manufacturing Information (PMI)
With enhanced 3D
annotation tools in Version 19, product manufacturing information (PMI)
is easily stored with 3D models and assemblies. These “smart” models
reduce the need for drawings in design reviews and can be used for
many downstream purposes,
including manufacturing.
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers standard for 3D product
definition (ASME Y14.41) legitimizes the use of 3D models for
conveying PMI. UGS has been a member of the Y14.41 committee since
its inception, playing a key role in helping define
the new standard.
The emerging ISO 16792 European Standard, also based on input from
the Y14.41 committee, will define the future for 3D CAD Model
definition and annotation.

Tip
from the Helpdesk
Are you up to
prepared for V19?
Back in October 2004 we told you that as
Microsoft were dropping support for Windows 2000 UGS were planning
to follow suit, with V18 only installing on Windows XP.
As it happened UGS did retain support for Windows 2000 with V18 but
any body installing Solid Edge on that OS would of been informed
that V19 certainly would not.
As we are now very close to V19 shipping
I wanted to remind you of this fact.
V19 will not install on Windows 2000 and you should be making plans
to upgrade your PC's to Win XP if you haven't already done so.
I also want to remind you of something
else that was a subject of an earlier mailer.
V19 will be shipping on a single DVD, not multiple CD's as
previously. You will therefore need access to a DVD ROM to install
the software.
64 Bit
Operating System Support
Are you creating Massive Assemblies and
running short of Physical Memory?
Windows XP (32bit), with Solid Edge V18 can only support a maximum
of 3GB of RAM. Windows XP64 running on a Intel EMT64 or AMD Opteron
based workstation can support anything up to a massive 132Gb RAM!
Version 19 of Solid Edge will be
available in two editions, the standard 32bit version and a new
64bit version developed for this configuration. If you require this
version please let us know ASAP as customers will be shipped the
32bit version by default.
There is no extra cost for the 64bit edition.
Changes to licensing method (Node Locked)
Version 19 reverts to using a license
file tied to a PC's MAC Address.
There will be detailed instructions shipped with Solid Edge on how
to generate your License key via the Internet.
Are you up to date?

First Thursday Webinar 8th June
Creating & Placing Dynamically
Configurable Sub-Assemblies.
This Webinar will
discuss the two key technologies required to achieve the above.
The first deals with the ability to control the positions of parts
within a subassembly relative to a local usage scenario. This is
also known as Adjustable Assemblies.
The second technology allows for selected parts used within the
subassembly to be 'defined' on placement. This is achieved either
through the selection of a predefined configuration of parts or
through the interactive selection of parts from a list of options.
This section of the presentation concentrates on Family of
Assemblies but will also cover Family of Parts &
Alternative Components
